sidebar"Allegorical Art" is a term James Muir uses to describe his work, which is filled with symbology to help create a heightened social, political and spiritual awareness. "The allegorical symbolism in my sculptures bridges the centuries of history to make contemporary statements about the human condition, in order to exemplify the highest qualities of man. My work speaks of Duty, Honor, Courage, Liberty and Justice, but above all, it speaks of Truth and the ultimate triumph of the human spirit". | A symbol of the eternal Quest for the Holy Grail.
Specifically, depicting a Master of the Teutonic Order of Knighthood from the 12th/13th century Crusades. ‘Durch Mitleid Wissen’: Motto of the Grail Knights—‘Through compassion to self-knowledge’—a call from the Immortal self of man resounding in the darkness of confusion and doubt within the human Soul’ ‘The Spear of Destiny’” After “Saving the Flag’s” hidden appeal to a moral and spiritual dedication to saving human liberty, it naturally follows that I, myself, must make a personal commitment to the same. This is the heart of “The Quest”—a vow immortalized in bronze on a foundation of granite dedicating my life and God-given talent to service. This piece began as a lump of clay without direction (just as our lives often seem) and progressed, without conscious guidance of self-will, to become an allegory for surrender and dedication to the Divine Will. In this respect, the subject being a Knight of the Holy Crusades, be he of the Tuetonic Order or, as I have always preferred to view him, a Knights Templar, was the most appropriate. In addition, one more fence (subject matter) was cut to allow the Spirit expression to, in time, find ever more lush fields and meadows for planting artistic seeds. It has been said that “Talent is God’s gift to a person. What you do with that talent is your gift back to God.” To which I always add “and the only way we can give anything to God is to give ourselves in service to his creation. |
In keeping with his deep spiritual convictions and social consciousness, Muir's sculptural subjects have expanded to reflect the critical nature of the times in which we live. Yet, whether historical or contemporary, "the golden thread that ties it all together is still my never-ending quest for the essence of life— for Truth in its purest form."
